Mme Sue Fry, French teacher in Gilbert Public Schools:
Campo Verde High School

La Societe Honoraire de Francais

French students at Campo Verde High School will be able to read, write, listen and speak French in real-world scenarios within authentic cultural contexts.  Level 1 students will reach Novice High level proficiency according to Arizona State and U.S. National standards as defined by the American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).  French 2 students will reach Intermediate Low proficiency and French level 3 students will reach Intermediate Mid proficiency.

Each unit of study will require students to memorize vocabulary, learn and apply grammatical concepts and understand and synthesize cultural norms within the context of that unit.  Students will demonstrate their abilities to read, write, understand and speak French in each unit through performance projects and criterion-referenced exams.  Students will maintain a proficiency portfolio in the classroom with these projects and exams and will conference regularly with me to focus on skills which need further development.

Each unit will begin with a list of student “I can” statements and students will be asked to track their progress toward these goals.  Each unit assessment will provide evidence of goal achievements. Students are encouraged to continue to revisit their goals and “I can” statements to re-do assessments in order to achieve proficiency on all the required elements.  These do overs are also ways to improve student grades to reach proficiency (80%).

Students MUST attend tutoring before they will be allowed do over a test.  Students are also allowed to retake portions of a test (they don’t have to redo the entire test!) Students receive FULL CREDIT for their improved grades.

Extracurricular Opportunities

The Société Honoraire de Français or National French Honor Society is represented with a chapter at Campo Verde High School.  Students are eligible for induction after Spring Break of their 2nd year of high school French.  Students must have a 3.0 overall G.P.A. and a 4.0 G.P.A. in their French courses.  Société members may be recognized at graduation with a special honor cord, a seal on their diploma and the ability to list their membership on college and job applications.  The national organization also offers scholarships, opportunities for further study and travel grants to Société members.

Students are also encouraged to participate in school organizations which focus on using their language skills.  At CVHS, the Culture Club plans an annual trip abroad. Other travel and cultural opportunities will be presented throughout the year and students are encouraged to participate. There will always be more information available through my Google Classroom, parent information night meetings, or handouts/flyers as these opportunities arise.
